HOME, Inc. Hosts Open House to Celebrate National Homeownership Month

This Saturday local businessleaders will be celebrating the completion of an almost 1,600 square foot homein the Capitol Park Neighborhood, the first of two affordable homes in thisneighborhood that will be completed by HOME, Inc. this summer.

The Open Door Celebration will be held June 18 from 11a.m. – 2 p.m.  at 1427 Penn Ave. in DesMoines. A short ceremony at 12:15 p.m. will feature the family as well as SukuRadia from Bankers Trust, Eric Idehen, Wells Fargo Housing Foundation, LindaWestergaard, Des Moines City Council and Eric Burmeister, Polk County HousingTrust Fund.  The public is invited tocome and tour the home and meet the family.Parking is available at Lutheran Hospital at the corner of RooseveltStreet and Pennsylvania Avenue. 

“We are excited thishousewarming is happening during National Homeownership Month,” said PamCarmichael, executive director of HOME, Inc. “Our family embodies thedetermination and hard work it takes to become a homeowner in today’s world.”

The family, who came to Iowafrom Kenya five years ago, first approached HOME, Inc. two years ago to enterthe homeownership counseling program.“Veronica and Dola were ready to purchase a home, but with their incomeand debt load it just wasn’t possible. But, they were committed to working withHOME, Inc. to make changes to their finances and do what was necessary toqualify for a mortgage,” she said.

Two years later, the familyof four – almost five with a baby due in July -- is ready to move into theirnew four-bedroom, two-bathroom home. 

“Veronica and Dola arerepresentative of low and very low income families we serve every day,”Carmichael said.  “Veronica is an adjunctprofessor at DMACC and works with local program that assists refugees. Dola isa customer service rep and is going to school part-time.  They are doing what they can to support theirsons and give them a stable home.  We’repleased to be able to be part of the process.”
