We need to add affordable housing units

It’s simple: we hate to see the loss of affordable housing.

The recent Des Moines Register story about the Elliot Apartments moving from affordable, low rent housing to market rate is disturbing. As developers continue to build apartment buildings across our community, there is little to no attention being paid to those families who are at or below 80% of median income.

We get it.  Materials cost the same whether the apartment is intended for low-income families or those whose income isn’t as limited. However, the need for affordable housingin Greater Des Moines is real.

We cannot continue to lose low-income housing options when the demand has only increased. We are rapidly reaching a critical juncture where we need to have a plan to address how we will add – not subtract –affordable units. This is important to keep our community growing and successful.
